Name: Gay Toys Pacer
Year: 1976-1984
Description: Gay Toys, now
American Plastic Toys,
made somewhat crude Pacer models in several colors. They were sold in
dime stores, targeted at younger children.
R. L. Fisher, V. P. of Engineering at American Plastic Toys, had the
following to say:
"Gay Toys and American Plastic Toys are the same company. We changed our
name in 1987. As Gay Toys we produced a Pacer in 1977-78. Old catalogs
show the item number as #676 it was approximately 9 1/2" long and was
blue or red with a black interior. It would have sold for about $1.00 at
the time. I guess we would have made 100,000 units of this toy."
Thomas J. Dowling, design engineer at American Plastic Toys, added:
"My name is Tom Dowling and Bob Fischer turned this investigation over to me.
I found your Pacer item #537. The problem was that we sold this car in an
assortment pack with three other cars. We also sold it with one other car on a
Car Hauler, but never as just an item by itself, so it was hard to find this
size you have.
"The car you have was sold from 1976 to 1984 and would have cost about 50 to
75 cents. 200,000 units could have been sold in that time, but it's hard to say
because it was never an item by itself.
"The Green body with White interior was sold both in the bulk pack and the Car
Hauler set."
Glen Hoag added the following information:
"There were actually two versions of the Gay Toys Pacer; one was about 6.5" long,
while the other was about 9.5" long."
The smaller version is the one mentioned above, which had a white interior and was
only sold in packs with other cars.
